"Beyond Visible", Infrared Photography by Kathy Hornsby

Kathy Hornsby's exhibit of over 30 images at the Williamsburg Contemporary Art Center showcases her recent interest in infrared photography. Using digital cameras with sensors converted to "see" only near infrared light, Hornsby captures landscapes, still lifes, and environmental portraits that at first glance appear to be time-honored black and white images. Upon further inspection, they reveal themselves to have a slight twist. Warm and cool tones emerge, atmosphere haze is penetrated, skin appears milky and porcelain-smooth, and a slightly surreal effect may be suggested. Hornsby's photographs reflect her interest in foreign cultures, dramatic geography, and the human connection. Featured artisans include Jan Southard, mixed media and Valerie Johnson, felting. The member spotlight artist is Sue Danehy. The Upstairs Gallery theme is Barns and Fall Colors. Hours: Tues-Sat 11-3, Sun 1-5; Extended hours Oct 1-2, 10-5; Oct 9, 11-5.
