The Age of Exploration was fueled by a quest for spices, and one of the most sought after were cloves. These cloves were used for food, medicine, perfumes, and in pomanders. These gilded containers not only signified wealth but also, it was believed, could help ward off pestilence. By the 18th century, global trade made cloves more commonplace, and the expensive pomander, now made with cloves and oranges, became a gift to share during the holidays. Come to The Mariners’ Museum on December 12 to make your own pomander this holiday season.
