Conservators in the USS Monitor Center’s Batten Conservation Laboratory at The Mariners’ Museum and Park will drain the 90,000-gallon treatment tank that houses USS Monitor’s iconic revolving gun turret this summer. Excavation and treatment will continue, as conservators plan to remove and replace the old treatment system, clean the interior and exterior of the object, and remove interior plating from the artifact. Behind these interior plates, the team is likely to find more artifacts associated with life onboard and about the sinking of USS Monitor. Public behind-the-scenes tours will be offered May 10th through July 1st at select times. Tours include a walk through the award winning Ironclad Revolution exhibit, an insider’s look at the Batten Conservation Complex, and the chance to go inside the turret tank, within inches of this iconic object; and visitors will get to handle some rarely seen USS Monitor artifacts.
