Overview

The Living Forest Interpretive Trail is a children's nature trail at Freedom Park! The trail, located directly behind the playground, winds through the forest and features interpretive signs for youth, families and for all ages. This trail opened in December 2016.

Children under the age of 12 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian and bicycles are not permitted on this trail.

Construction of the trail was a collaborative effort. Employees of the GoApe! Treetop Adventure Course took on the trail as a service project, clearing most of the trail surface, building benches for the trail, and providing the interpretive signs. Volunteers from the Historic Rivers Chapter of the Virginia Master Naturalists provided content and pictures for the interpretive signs, and will lead interpretive walks throughout the year. Members of the Zeta Mu Mu Omega Psi Phi fraternity, one of the Freedom Park Adopt-a-Park groups, did a significant portion of trail clearing as well.
