Williamsburg Pottery Factory
It began as a small pottery, where Jimmy Maloney made saltglaze in the authentic 18th-century manner, using clay from the nearby James River. He added china and glassware, buying at low prices so savings could be passed onto his customers. He kept expanding to more homemade buildings with dirt floors, rough shelves, and newspaper wrapped purchases. The customers loved the informal atmosphere, the savings and great merchandise selection from around the world - and went on to tell their friends.
The Williamsburg Pottery is now writing a new chapter in its 74-year history of offering intruiging merchandise at great values. A $30-million revitalization and construction project is creating an entirely new design and shopping experience beginning April 2012.
The new Williamsburg Pottery encompasses more than 160,000 square feet of retail space with three building designed in a unique Old World style. Transformed from a no-frills warehouse format, the new complex combines the charm of traditional European market with the conveniences and interactive experiences of 21st- century shopping. The Pottery's new energy-efficient retail complex features courtyard plazas for entertainment and special events for all ages. A fourth building houses a spacious Au Bon Pain cafe and restaurant.
Shoppers will still find the Pottery's famous range of artisans and their services, such as the award-winning custom framing and silk floral arrangement, as well as its famed salt-glaze pottery and "own-grown" geraniums and plants, all produced on the Pottery's grounds.
