Savor the Culinary Cornucopia at the Williamsburg Harvest Celebration
Chefs, vintners, brewers, and farmers show off their delectable wares at this spectacular two-week foodie festival.
It's called the Williamsburg Harvest Celebration, but an alternative name might be 10 Days in Foodie Heaven.
From cooking demonstrations with local culinary masters to world-class food and drink tastings to five-course tasting menus of local specialties, this festival offers more than 35 events for anyone who enjoys eating and drinking.
Last year’s inaugural festival proved so popular that not only is there a second helping starting Nov. 4, but it's a heaping helping, doubling the run to 10 days from five.
It's a testament to the burgeoning food and drink scene in Greater Williamsburg, where new restaurants, breweries, and distilleries seem to pop up weekly. When OpenTable listed the 100 best restaurants for foodies in the land, they included big names from big cities, but also Williamsburg's AAA Four Diamond Fat Canary.
Here are some highlights from the Williamsburg Harvest Celebration, which runs from Nov. 4 to Nov. 13 with events across the area. Some of these will sell out, so don't wait to get your tickets. Check the full schedule for the offerings that appeal to your palate.
On Nov. 4, the celebration opens with a bang with the popular Chowder Fest at Jamestown Beach Event Park. Live music, unlimited chowder from a dozen restaurants, including Fat Canary and Waypoint Seafood and Grill, and drinks are part of the celebration under the big tent.
The next morning during the Farmer's Market on Williamsburg's Duke of Gloucester Street, step up and watch free cooking demonstrations at 10:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. by some of the area's best chefs. Can't make it that day? The demonstrations will be offered again the following Saturday at Yorktown Market Days.
Later that day, Nov. 5, Border Springs Farm lamb will pair with Rappahannock Oyster Co. shellfish at the Williamsburg Winery, the largest winery in Virginia and another local treasure. Head out to the grounds for a unique sophisticated event.
For less costly fun, try the MAD about Chocolate chocolate fondue tasting on Nov. 7, followed by the Merchant's Square Tapas Crawl in Williamsburg on Nov. 8 that rolls from The Cheese Shop to Berret's Seafood Restaurant & Taphouse Grill to the Hair of the DOG Bottle Shop.
If you can't make the Tuesday Tapas Crawl in Williamsburg, there's another one in Yorktown on Nov. 10, featuring Water Street Grille and Riverwalk Restaurant. Have your Uber or Lyft app ready for the round-trip ride.
On Nov. 10, hit the trail – the new Williamsburg Tasting Trail Craft Brewery Tour. Board a luxury Kingsmill Resort coach at the Virginia Beer Company and head to Alewerks Brewing Company, celebrating its 10th year. Then stop at Brass Cannon Brewing just around the corner before lunch at Second Street Bistro. After lunch, return to the Virginia Beer Company, one of the newer kids in town, which offers a constantly changing rotation of limited-edition beers in addition to their regular pours. Stay as long as you like; the tour ends there.
For something different that night in Williamsburg, check out Flavors of Spain at La Tienda, the region's finest gourmet Spanish food and wine shop with a mouthwatering array of offerings.
On Nov. 11, the Bountiful Brews & Bites event at Jamestown Beach Event Park returns after its smashing debut last year. Craft beers, food trucks, live music, and fireworks – yes, fireworks! – make it a great family event.
Keep the fun going at the Blessing of the Harvest at Bruton Parish Episcopal Church in Colonial Williamsburg on Nov. 12. Join farmers, brewers, vintners, artisans, watermen, and chefs as they give thanks for the bounty of the region.
Then enjoy the best the region has to offer at the Oyster Roast at The Freight Shed in Yorktown on Nov. 13. It doesn't get fresher than shucked, fried, and roasted oysters from all eight regions of the state. Enjoy bluegrass music, craft beer, and wine from the Colonial Wine Trail. What a way to end two weeks of culinary bliss!
