If you like to walk, consider a stroll down historic Duke of Gloucester Street. Start at the Wren Building at the College of William and Mary  and enjoy a mile long walk through Colonial Williamsburg's Historic Area that will take you back to the 18th century — past modern shops at Merchants Square, alongside beautiful gardens , and where horse-drawn carriages are the only vehicles in your path. You end at the Capitol Building, where Patrick Henry, Thomas Jefferson and George Washington once debated.

Pack a picnic and drive the Colonial Parkway from Jamestown to Yorktown by way of Williamsburg — glorious at any time of year. Squeeze in a visit to historical attractions, Jamestown Settlement, the Yorktown Victory Center and Colonial Williamsburg, and two national park sites, Historic Jamestowne and Yorktown Battlefield, all adjacent to the Parkway.Kayaks

For more varied activity, explore the many Parks throughout Williamsburg, York County and James City County, where you can bicycle, hike, rent a paddle boat, skateboard, birdwatch, kayak, sail, fish — or just sit under a shady tree watching eagles and herons fly overhead.

Shop along Riverwalk Landing in Yorktown , relax on the waterfront beach, and then take a boat down the York River.

Follow the path of John Smith by exploring his water routes along Captain John Smith Chesapeake National Historic Trail or a combination of water and auto routes along the Captain John Smith's Trail.

Hike or bike along Greensprings Greenway Interpretive Trail and watch beavers build their dam as neighborhood otters frolic nearby.

Colonial Parkway: Take a leisurely drive or bike along the scenic 23-mile Colonial Parkway which provides a physical and metaphorical link between the two Jamestown, Yorktown and Williamsburg.

Chickahominy Riverfront Park: Enjoy this 140-acre outdoor facility on the banks of the beautiful Chickahominy River. From fishing, boating, hiking and sunsets, this Park has got it all!

College Landing Park: Right down the road from William and Mary, this passive park provides a lookout tower and marsh walkway through College Creek.

Freedom Park: Rich in history, this 676-acre park preserves the First Free Black Settlement in America (1803), the Revolutionary War Battle of Spenser's Ordinary (1781) snf s 17th century domicile. Peaceful and relaxing, take some time to enjoy open meadows and trails.

Greensprings Greenway Hiking Trail: Link history and nature by hiking a 4.7-mile soft surface trail that retraces the footsteps of Native Americans and early colonists. Weave your way through one of the areas largest wildlife habitats with boardwalks over marshes and a beaver pond. Near Jamestown Island.

Kiwanis Municipal Park: This 27-acre park provides two lighted ball fields, numerous pieces of playground equipment and a shelter with picnic tables. Seven lighted all-weather tennis courts are available to the public on a first-come, first-served basis.

Little Creek Reservoir Park: Ready for a quiet day on the water? This scenic park overlooks a 996-acre reservoir that's a fisherman's paradise. Perfect for outdoor family time in the Historic Triangle.

Mid County Park & Kidsburg: Take a break and enjoy one of the community's favorite parks. Outdoor family activities are plentiful at the 19-acre Park including Kidsburg, the area's largest community-built playground.

New Quarter Park: Offering 545-acres of land next to the Colonial Parkway and close to Williamsburg, New Quarter offers a tranquil, woodland setting and the pleasures of outdoor recreation from hiking, biking, and fishing to picnicking.

Powhatan Creek Park and Blueway: Bring a canoe or kayak and see Jamestown Island like no one else. Powhatan Creek is part of the Chesapeake Gateways Network created by the National Park Service and the Chesapeake Bay Program. Provides access to Jamestown Island and the James River.

Quarterpath Park: This 23-acre facility includes three lighted softball fields; a 25-meter, 6-lane, z-shaped outdoor swimming pool; three all-weather tennis courts; playground equipment; and a picnic shelter.

Skate Park: Think outside the triangle (the Historic Triangle, that is). Ten thousand square feet of concrete jumps and ramps for skateboards and in-line skates. Helmets and protective gear recommended. Kids under 12 should be accompanied by an adult.

Stonehouse Stables/Lakewood Trails: We offer guided horseback riding daily year-round, weather permitting. A fun-filled environment for the whole family (ages 7 and up). A guide will take you out for a ride on one of our experienced and quiet-mannered horses. Please call to make reservations.

Waller Mill Park: A beautiful park close to everything that overlooks a 343-acre lake and provides a variety of outdoor activities from boating to hiking. A community favorite for picnics and natural beauty. Rent a boat or bring your own.

York River State Park: Experience the environment of a coastal estuary. This park is known for its rare and delicate environment, where freshwater and saltwater meet to create a habitat rich in marine and plant life. Access to Taskinas Creek and York River provides access to a local natural treasure. A wide variety of activities.

Yorktown Waterfront: On the York River at historic Yorktown, this 2-acre beachfront offers a relaxing day for everyone whether it's fishing, relaxing in the sun or picnicking in the 10 1/2 acre Beach picnic area. Perfect for families in a peaceful, no-hassle setting.
