Five Questions With...Auntie M of Auntie M's American Cottage
1. What is your favorite activity in the Williamsburg area?
We're located right on the York River, which allows for some amazing outdoor opportunities. I enjoy running on the beach and walking along the riverside. It's a great place to meet new people, whether it be at one of the many farmer's markets or out dining.
2. What makes this area unique?
There are not many other places that can balance a uniquely beautiful destination with such historical significance. I've always been fascinated by Yorktown's history, with its connections to the beginnings of American independence. When you're here, you can walk on the same grounds as our founding fathers.
3. How would you describe your store?
Auntie M's American Cottage features a rich array of handcrafted contemporary and traditional work from myself and other local artists. We strive to provide one-of-a-kind pieces along with a variety of unique, affordable items.
4. As an artist, where do you find your inspiration?
Inspiration is everywhere, especially in a place like this. Typically, I find my inspiration in nature, so walking along the river or our many trails helps me to find flowers or wildlife to paint.
5. What's your favorite piece in Auntie M's?
That's like asking a mother to name her favorite child! I love the bud vases from artist Emily Dill. Also, Yorktown's Sharon Dombrowski makes stunning, colorful fishbowls with fused glass. Of course, I love making my own folk art for the store as well.
