Jamestown Settlement's "Origins of American Democracy" theme month culminates on July 27 & 28 with a special weekend of themed tours, interpretive programs and military exercises honoring the first General Assembly in 1619, the oldest legislative body in the Western Hemisphere. Discuss Powhatan Indian politics in the re-created village, explore the governor's house, learn about the rule of law and join in a drill to defend the colony. View new 1619 exhibits and the original "Proceedings of the First General Assembly" minutes, on loan for the first time in America from The National Archives of the United Kingdom, through September 30.

Jamestown Settlement is a year-round stage for the 2019 Commemoration, American Evolution. "Democracy Weekend" activities, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. are included with museum admission. Residents of York County, James City County and the City of Williamsburg, including William & Mary students, receive free admission with proof of residency.
