Join cooper Marshall Scheetz and blacksmiths Shel Browder and Steve Mankowski as they demonstrate two trades that were practiced during the earliest years of the settlement at Jamestown.

The trade of coopering – the making of wooden storage containers – has existed for over 3,000 years and "casks" were used to transport cargos of wine, beer, tobacco, sugar, and salt. Mr. Scheetz will discuss the tools of the trade as well as the differences in the types of containers necessary for "wet" versus "dry" goods.

Blacksmiths Shel Browder and Steve Mankowski will be setup on the site of the first blacksmith shop at Jamestown, dating to 1608. While discussing the types of work the first blacksmiths did, they will be replicating items that have been recovered from archaeological investigations of the earliest parts of the fort.
