Since 1895, archaeologists have been searching for evidence of Sir Walter Raleigh’s legendary 1587 “Lost Colony” on Roanoke Island in North Carolina. Nicholas Luccketti, First Colony Foundation research vice-president, will present an overview of the history of the search, focusing on the excavations of 1991-1993, led by the late Ivor Noel Hume, that successfully identified a 1585 scientific workshop at Fort Raleigh National Historic Site. He’ll also touch on the recent work of First Colony Foundation archaeologists at Fort Raleigh and up the Albemarle Sound—who have unearthed a site of a splinter group of Lost Colonists!
