Day One: History, Culture & Flavor

Morning:

  • Kick off your day at Tipsy Bean Cafe for your morning brew and breakfast. It's the perfect cozy spot to grab a coffee, try their signature pastries or breakfast sandwiches, and start your day. For larger groups, there are numerous delightful breakfast group dining options available.

  • Take a tour of The Historic First Baptist Church. Founded in 1776 by both enslaved and free Black people, it’s one of the earliest African American congregations in the nation. Step inside, learn about its powerful history, and vibe with the stories it tells.

Mid-Morning

  • Visit William & Mary, founded in 1693 in Williamsburg, it is the second-oldest institution of higher education in the United States. On campus, the Sankofa Bird Statue honors the first African American resident students and the Hearth: Memorial to the Enslaved commemorates the enslaved people who lived and worked at the university.

Lunch:

  • Grab lunch at a local spot—maybe a casual bite or something hearty that hits the spot. Williamsburg has some delicious options, so treat your group to some flavorful food to keep you going!

Afternoon:

  • Head over to Colonial Williamsburg, where history comes alive. Start by checking out the excavation site of the First Baptist Church. Don’t miss The Bray School, the oldest building dedicated to educating Black children in the U.S. It’s a must-see. 

Dinner:

  • The historic taverns at Colonial Williamsburg offer a unique dining experience that transports you back to the 18th century. Each tavern is meticulously designed to reflect the colonial era, with authentic decor and traditional recipes updated for modern tastes. It’s history served on a plate! Day Two: Adventure, Nature & Jamestown

Morning:

  • Get a true Southern breakfast at Southern Pancake and Waffle House. Waffles, pancakes, grits—you name it. You’ll definitely be fueled up for the day of adventure ahead! 

  • Freedom Park is next—a 600-acre gem that preserves the site of one of the first free Black settlements in America. It’s the perfect spot to explore nature while learning about its rich history.

Midday:

  • Explore Historic Jamestowne, learn about the first Africans in Virginia, and dive into the story of Angela (Angelo), the first African woman recorded at Jamestown. This key chapter in American history will leave you reflecting on the journey of Black Americans. 

  • Jamestown Glasshouse: Stop by and watch costumed glassblowers bring their craft to life. 

Lunch:

  • Hibachi Buddha is your lunch destination for a take-out experience. The food here is packed with fresh, vibrant flavors, and you’ll love the Asian-inspired dishes. Think savory, satisfying, and totally Instagram-worthy. Larger groups can work with the Visit Williamsburg Sales Team and Jamestown Settlement teams to coordinate catered lunches at the Jamestown Settlement Cafe

Afternoon:

  • Jamestown Settlement is up next. Check out the exhibits that tell the story of the first Africans in America, their journey from Ndongo (Angola), life in the Virginia colony, and the evolution of African-American culture. This museum puts so much history in perspective, and you’ll leave feeling enlightened. 

Dinner:

  • End your day with a true soul food feast at Cory’s Chicken Shack. This family-owned spot serves up the best-fried chicken and comfort food in town, making it the perfect place to cap off your history-filled day.

Day Three: Shopping, Fun & Black-Owned Finds

Morning:

  • Start your morning at The Coffeehouse just outside of town. They roast their own beans, so you’re guaranteed a top-tier cup of coffee. It’s a community fave, so you’ll be sipping on something truly local and delicious.

  • Head to the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown. Make sure to explore the African American exhibits, which provide a powerful and insightful look into the roles and experiences of African Americans during the Revolutionary War. One highlight is Phillis Wheatley’s 1773 book, Poems on Various Subjects, Religious and Moral, the first book published by a woman of African descent.

Lunch:

Afternoon:

  • Take some time to explore the boutique shops at Riverwalk Landing. You’ll find specialty waterfront shops offering jewelry, quilts, art, home decor, and Yorktown souvenirs.

  • Room Escape Williamsburg is next on the agenda. It’s time to channel your inner detective and dive into puzzles, riddles, and a little bit of mystery. Your team-building skills will be tested to crack the codes and solve your way out. Get ready to put your game face on!
